How to Mix Acrylics for Beginners

By Harris Art Academy Staff

Acrylic paint is one of the most versatile mediums you can use as an artist. It dries quickly, blends easily, and can be used on a variety of surfaces. But if you’re new to painting, mixing acrylics can feel intimidating. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you get started.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

Before you begin, make sure you have the essentials.

  • Primary colors (red, blue, yellow)

  • White and black acrylic paint

  • A mixing palette (plastic, glass, or disposable palette paper)

  • A palette knife or flat brush

  • Cup of water and paper towels

Step 2: Start With Primary Colors

All colors can be created from red, blue, and yellow. Start by squeezing a small amount of each onto your palette.

  • Red + Yellow = Orange

  • Blue + Yellow = Green

  • Red + Blue = Purple

Step 3: Lighten or Darken Your Colors

Use white paint to create lighter “tints” of your mixed color, and add black for darker “shades.” Go slowly—black can overpower the mixture.

Step 4: Experiment With Neutrals

Mixing complementary colors (like blue and orange, red and green, or yellow and purple) will give you browns and grays. These are perfect for backgrounds and shadows.

Step 5: Keep a Mixing Record

Create a color chart as you go. Place a dab of the original color next to your mix and label it. Over time, this will become your personal reference guide.

Pro Tip From Our Instructors

Don’t overmix. Leaving slight streaks of color in your brushwork can create depth and texture in your paintings.
