Why the Principles of Art Are the Core of Learning at Harris Art Academy 🎨

At Harris Art Academy, we don’t just teach students how to draw or paint — we teach them how to think like artists. One of the ways we do this is by emphasizing the Principles of Art, the guidelines that bring order, meaning, and expression to any creative work.

What Are the Principles of Art?

The Principles of Art are the “rules” artists use to arrange the Elements of Art (line, shape, color, texture, form, space, and value). They transform raw ideas into finished pieces that feel balanced, powerful, and complete.

Here are the principles we explore in our classes:

  • Balance – Distributing visual weight so artwork feels stable.

  • Contrast – Using differences (light/dark, rough/smooth, big/small) to create interest.

  • Emphasis – Guiding the viewer’s eye to the focal point.

  • Movement – Creating a sense of flow or direction.

  • Pattern – Repetition of shapes, colors, or lines to build order.

  • Proportion – Relationships of size that create harmony or drama.

  • Rhythm – A visual “beat,” created with repeated elements and variation.

  • Unity – The sense that everything belongs together.

  • Variety – Adding differences to keep the artwork lively.

Why We Teach Them at Harris Art Academy

Understanding these principles gives students the power to:

  • Design with purpose instead of guessing what “looks good.”

  • Build confidence by seeing their ideas come together in strong compositions.

  • Recognize quality in art — both their own work and professional pieces.

  • Stretch creativity while still grounding it in structure.

These skills aren’t just about making art — they teach students to organize ideas, make choices, and solve problems creatively.

How Students Practice the Principles

In our studio, the Principles of Art are woven into every project:

  • When creating collage portraits, students use balance and unity to tie together different pieces.

  • During our sugar skull workshops, contrast and pattern bring designs to life.

  • In painting and drawing classes, students experiment with emphasis and proportion to create depth and impact.

The principles become second nature — tools students can use in any medium, from pencil sketches to digital design.

Why Parents Value This Approach

Families who join Harris Art Academy notice the difference: our students aren’t just “making crafts.” They are learning the language of art. By mastering the Principles, students gain a foundation that will support them no matter where their creativity takes them — fine arts, design, or any field that values problem-solving and innovation.

📍 Harris Art Academy is located on US Highway 9 in Howell, NJ, proudly serving Freehold, Jackson, Manalapan, and the surrounding communities.

👉 Learn more about our classes at www.harrisartacademy.com and see how the Principles of Art help students grow as confident, creative thinkers.

At Harris Art Academy, we believe the Principles of Art are more than guidelines — they are the foundation for a lifetime of creativity.

Building Creative Foundations: How the Elements and Principles of Art Shape Learning at Harris Art Academy 🎨

At Harris Art Academy, we often say that art is more than a skill — it’s a way of thinking. That’s why the Elements and Principles of Art are central to every lesson we teach. They are more than abstract ideas; they’re the framework that helps students grow as creators and problem-solvers.

Why They Matter in a School Setting

Many parents ask, “Why spend time on the basics? Isn’t art about free expression?”

The truth is — both are important. The Elements (line, shape, color, texture, value, form, space) and Principles (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, rhythm, pattern, proportion, unity, variety) give students a structure to understand how art works. With this foundation:

  • Students have the freedom to experiment while still learning discipline.

  • They develop critical thinking skills, learning to make choices about what to emphasize and how to create balance.

  • They gain the confidence to move from “I don’t know what to draw” to “I know how to start.”

How We Bring Them to Life

At Harris Art Academy, we don’t just list the Elements and Principles on the wall — we put them into practice. For example:

  • A student painting a sugar skull learns how contrast and color create visual impact.

  • In a collage portrait workshop, students explore texture, shape, and unity.

  • During seasonal projects, even young students start noticing balance and proportion without realizing they’re mastering advanced concepts.

Beyond the Art Room

The benefits don’t stop at art. Understanding the Elements and Principles helps students:

  • Strengthen observation skills — noticing details others might overlook.

  • Apply creative problem-solving in academics, sports, and everyday life.

  • Build confidence as they realize they can bring their own ideas to life in thoughtful, structured ways.

Why Families Value This Approach

Parents tell us that the difference at Harris Art Academy is clear: our students don’t just “make crafts” — they learn the language of art. By mastering the Elements and Principles, students develop skills that will stay with them, whether they continue in fine art, digital design, or simply carry creativity into other parts of life.

📍 Harris Art Academy is located on US Highway 9 in Howell, NJ, proudly serving Freehold, Jackson, Manalapan, and surrounding communities.

Why the Elements and Principles of Art Matter at Harris Art Academy 🎨✨

At Harris Art Academy, we believe that every student has the potential to create meaningful, beautiful, and expressive artwork. But behind every masterpiece — whether it’s a painting, sculpture, or digital illustration — are the foundations of art: the Elements and Principles of Art.

These aren’t just academic concepts. They’re the building blocks of creativity, and that’s why they are emphasized in every class at Harris Art Academy.

What Are the Elements of Art?

The Elements of Art are the tools artists use to create:

  • Line, Shape, Form, Color, Value, Texture, and Space.

They are like the ingredients of a recipe. Just as a chef uses flour, sugar, and butter in different ways to create unique dishes, artists use these elements to bring their ideas to life.

What Are the Principles of Art?

The Principles of Art are how artists arrange those elements to create harmony and meaning:

  • Balance, Contrast, Emphasis, Movement, Pattern, Proportion, Rhythm, Unity, and Variety.

Think of them as the recipe instructions. They tell us how to combine the ingredients to make a work that feels complete and impactful.

Why We Teach Them at Harris Art Academy

While it’s fun to simply “make art,” we know students benefit most when they understand why their art works. By learning the Elements and Principles, our students:

  • Build confidence in their creative choices

  • Develop strong technical skills they can apply to any medium

  • Gain the ability to analyze and discuss art with insight

  • Learn to solve problems creatively, a skill that extends far beyond the studio

How We Incorporate Them into Classes

From beginner lessons to advanced workshops, the Elements and Principles are always part of the process:

  • Younger students might explore line and color through playful projects.

  • Older students might use contrast and balance to strengthen their compositions.

  • Special workshops (like collage portraits, sugar skulls, or seasonal projects) highlight how these concepts apply across different styles and traditions.

The Harris Art Academy Difference

We don’t just teach “how to draw” or “how to paint.” We teach students to think like artists. Understanding the Elements and Principles gives our students the foundation to grow as creators, to express their ideas clearly, and to appreciate the art they see in the world around them.

📍 Located on US Highway 9 in Howell, NJ, Harris Art Academy proudly serves students from Freehold, Jackson, Manalapan, and beyond.

Harris Art Academy Fundraiser Supports METAvivor Breast Cancer Research

It all begins with an idea.

At Harris Art Academy, we’ve always believed that art is more than paint on canvas — it’s a way to inspire, connect, and give back to our community. This past December, our Howell art school hosted a very special Holiday Art Exhibit and Fundraiser to support METAvivor, an organization that funds life-saving research for Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer.

On Friday, December 2, 2022, families, students, and friends gathered in a heated tent outside our Regal Plaza studio. The evening was filled with dancing, appetizers, hot chocolate, and, of course, incredible artwork created by our students. Every piece carried more than creativity — it carried hope. Together, our community helped raise funds and awareness for a cause that touches so many lives.

✨ A Community Built on Heart

Our founder, Candice Harris, set the tone years ago by painting and donating over 200 one-of-a-kind heart canvases to New Jersey hospitals during the pandemic. That same spirit of giving inspired this event, proving that art can heal, uplift, and unite people in powerful ways.

At Harris Art Academy, we’re proud to be more than an art school. We’re a community partner, always willing to step forward when there’s a need — whether it’s celebrating creativity, supporting local families, or lending our studio to causes that matter.

💬 Stories That Inspire

We were honored to welcome Tami Eagle Bowling, co-founder of the METAvivor New Jersey chapter, as our guest speaker. Tami shared her story of being diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer at just 41, when doctors gave her two years to live. Seven years later, her message of resilience and gratitude continues to inspire everyone who meets her.

Her words that night reminded us of the strength that comes from research, advocacy, and community support:

“Every time I saw the tri-color ribbon painting at the hospital, it gave me hope that a long life is possible with continued research and support.”

🎗️ Art That Carries Hope

One of the most moving parts of the evening was learning how art connected Harris and Bowling. After Tami saw Candice’s painting “Life” online, Candice recreated it in METAvivor’s ribbon colors — pink, teal, and green — to symbolize hope and healing. That painting now hangs in the Dubin Breast Center at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, offering encouragement to countless patients.

🌟 Moving Forward

The fundraiser proved what we already know — when art and community come together, incredible things happen. Our students shared their talents, our neighbors showed their generosity, and together we contributed to research that gives families hope.

This event is just one example of how Harris Art Academy continues to use creativity to make a difference. From local fundraisers to kids’ workshops to family events, we’re committed to keeping our doors open not just as a studio, but as a home for community and compassion.

If you’d like to support METAvivor’s work, you can still visit: donate.metavivor.org/HarrisArtAcademy.

Harris Art Academy Brings Expressionism and Modern Media to Howell

Harris Art Academy in Howell, N.J., opened in 2020 to reimagine art education through expressionism and modern media. Offering classes for children and adults in painting, mixed media, design, and more, the academy provides flexible schedules, online options, and community events that encourage creativity and connection.

HOWELL, N.J. — When Harris Art Academy opened its doors in December 2020, it set out to reimagine what art education could look like in Monmouth County. Founded by artist Candice Harris of West Freehold, the school was created to give students of all ages a place to explore creative expression through modern media.

Located at 2211 U.S. Highway 9 North in Howell, the academy began offering classes on December 21, 2020, both in-person and online, with flexible scheduling for families and individuals.

A Different Kind of Art School

Unlike traditional programs, Harris Art Academy emphasizes expressionism and experimentation. Students are encouraged to cross over between media—whether it’s resin, watercolor, acrylic, anime illustration, sneaker design, silk screening, or even YouTube channel creation—instead of staying confined to one path.

“There’s no right or wrong here,” said founder Candice Harris. “We’re trying to change the landscape of art education by teaching foundational skills with today’s materials and giving students the freedom to see where their imagination takes them.”

Classes for Kids and Adults

Classes are open to children as young as 3, as well as adults looking to build or refresh their skills. Sessions run weekdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For those who prefer online learning, the school offers a multi-camera virtual classroom experience with room for up to 100 participants.

Beyond the Classroom

Harris Art Academy doesn’t just teach—it provides platforms for students to share their work. Four weeks each year, the academy becomes a student art gallery, giving artists the opportunity to exhibit and sell their creations. The school also hosts seminars with professional artists, helping students prepare for higher education or careers in the arts.

Supporting the Community Through Art

Harris sees art as more than skill-building—it’s a form of connection.
“Art is critical at this time,” she explained. “People are lonely, kids can’t stay online all the time. They need to try something fun, and we’re committed to producing an experience that broadens creative horizons.”

Looking Ahead

The grand opening celebration in early 2021 featured Victor Sanz, creative director at TUMI, and included a fundraising effort to support students at Pratt Institute, where both Harris and Sanz studied.
